Two kinds of farm visit

A reindeer farm visit in Levi usually means one of two things. The compact version takes about an hour and a half: a transfer, time with the herders and their reindeer, a short sleigh ride and something hot to drink. That is the format of this site's tour, and of several sleigh rides bookable from the village.

The other kind is a half day at a small farm out in the wilderness. Here the reindeer are part of a longer program: a walk on snowshoes across a frozen lake, a campfire, a lunch, sometimes ice fishing or a climb up a fell. These visits run 3 to 5.5 hours, keep groups small and cost more.

Neither is better in itself. If your days in Levi are full of skiing and you want to meet reindeer and hear how herding works, the compact visit fits into an afternoon. If you want to feel how quiet Lapland is away from the slopes, a wilderness farm gives you hours, not minutes, with the animals and the landscape.

The compact visit this site recommends

This site's tour is the reindeer experience run by Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park Levi. You meet your guide, are driven to the reindeer in Levi, and spend the visit with local herders and farmers who explain the traditions of reindeer herding and answer questions about local life, including how herders know which reindeer belongs to them.

There is time for photos with the reindeer, a short sleigh ride and hot juice with cookies; pickup and drop-off from set locations and a guide in English are included. It lasts 1.5 hours and starts from $130, cancellable at no charge until 24 hours ahead, and you can book now and pay later.

With 503 reviews it is the most reviewed reindeer visit from Levi, rated 4.14. Reviewers praise the guides and the information about the animals, and some found the ride short; treat it as a farm visit with a ride, not a long sleigh journey. Children aged 4 to 12 pay a child rate, and anyone 13 or older pays the adult price.

Reindeer farm in Lapland and the things we did not know

Ice fishing at Lompolo, a fell walk, or Raattama by sleigh

The same family runs two more visits. One goes 35 minutes to the wilderness village of Lompolo, which the listing describes as home to 55 people and over 6,500 reindeer; after the farm visit you try ice fishing for perch and share a soup lunch in a hut. It lasts 4 hours, accepts children from 4 years, takes up to 8 and starts from $287, rated 5.00 from 26 reviews.

The other combines a traditional reindeer farm, with lassoing practice using a suopunki, with a 15-minute drive to a wilderness fell and a 20-minute hike to the top, then a campfire. It lasts 3 hours and starts from $299, but has only 2 reviews so far and excludes children under 13.

Saivo Wild Lapland takes private groups to the village of Raattama for a farm visit, then by snowmobile sleigh to Saivo for snowshoeing to a river and a lake and a homemade soup lunch in a cabin. At 5.5 hours it is the longest, from $218, with 3 reviews, a minimum of 2 participants and no children under 12.

What makes an ethical reindeer farm in Lapland

Searching for an ethical reindeer farm in Lapland is a fair instinct, and there are signs you can check. Visit Rovaniemi puts the principle simply: on responsible tours the animals are never forced to run or pull a sled, and activities are based on their natural characteristics and needs.11

Watch how the animals are handled. Visit Finland asks visitors to treat reindeer respectfully, noting that they do not like loud noises, sudden movements or petting, and Finnish law forbids frightening them.112 A farm where guides keep groups calm, step in when someone crowds an animal, and let reindeer rest is doing its job.

Read what a listing commits to. Small group limits, a family that lives with the herd, a clear account of what the reindeer eat and how the visit fits the herding year are all good signs. The Sámi Parliament adds one more test for any farm that presents Sámi culture: in Sámi tourism, the providers come from within the Sámi community.13

Dressing and planning for a long day outside

A wilderness visit means hours outdoors, much of it standing, walking slowly or sitting by a fire. The cold is real: at the Kittilä Airport station February averages a daily low of -16.4 °C and a high of -7.4 °C.14 Check what is lent: Soma Adventures includes thermal long jackets, while Saivo Wild Lapland lists clothes as not included.

Layer as Visit Levi advises: merino next to the skin for those who sweat little, fleece above it and a windproof hooded jacket outermost; a fur hat suits the deepest cold.151617 Snowshoeing warms you up, and the fire at the end cools you down, so carry a dry spare layer in a small backpack.

Daylight shapes the plan in midwinter. The middle of December brings no sunrise in Levi, and the middle of January only 3.2 hours of daylight.14 A start in the middle of the day makes the most of the light; ask the operator which start times it offers.

Which visit to book

If you have one free afternoon between ski days, take the compact visit: 1.5 hours with herders, a short ride and hot juice, from $130. It is the simplest way to meet reindeer from Levi and hear how herding works.

If you can give the reindeer a full half day, Soma Adventures' lakeside farm has the strongest record of the wilderness visits, at 4.96 from 95 reviews. Families with younger children should look at the Lompolo ice fishing day, which accepts children from 4 years.

Groups who want privacy and the longest day can book Raattama with Saivo Wild Lapland, keeping in mind that its review count is still tiny. Whichever you choose, book early in the season: small farms take small groups, and a full date is full.
