Why a reindeer visit works for families

A reindeer farm with kids is an easy win on a Lapland holiday. The ride is slow, the animals are calm when handled well, and the visit is short enough for small attention spans. Visit Finland describes reindeer rides as moderate in speed and suitable for all ages.1

There is also plenty for children to do besides riding. On this site's tour there is time for photos with the reindeer, a short sleigh ride and hot juice with cookies, while local herders answer questions about the animals and life in Lapland. Children who ask how a herder knows which reindeer is whose get a real answer: the herders explain exactly that.

Feeding adds a hands-on moment. Several Levi visits include it, from reindeer feeding at the Sokkaporantie farm to feeding young reindeer in their corral after the 3 km ride. At Samiland in Levi you can buy a bag of lichen and let children feed the paddock reindeer by hand.2

Ages and prices, listing by listing

Start with the rules, because they differ more than parents expect. On this site's tour, children aged 4 to 12 travel at a child rate, and anyone 13 or older pays the adult price; the visit lasts 1.5 hours and starts from $130. On the Lovimainas rides, anyone 14 and above counts as an adult.

For the youngest, some listings are explicit. Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's husky and reindeer combo with a snowmobile taste says it suits children over 2 years, and Easy Travel's reindeer safari lets infants ride on a parent's lap, with children accompanied by an adult. The Keo Wilderness combo, by contrast, is not suitable for babies under 1.

The longer wilderness visits are for older children. Soma Adventures' lakeside farm and its farm and fell walk exclude children under 13, and Saivo Wild Lapland's Raattama day excludes children under 12. The exception is Soma's Lompolo ice fishing day, which accepts children from 4 years.

Preparing children for the reindeer

A short talk before the visit makes a big difference. Explain that reindeer are not pets: Visit Finland calls them semi-domesticated, half tame and half wild, and every one of them belongs to a herder.3 They can be curious, but they startle easily.

Give children a few simple rules: speak softly, move slowly, and touch only when the guide says so. Visit Finland notes that reindeer do not like loud noises, sudden movements or petting, and Finnish law forbids frightening them.45 The Sámi Parliament's guidance for visitors adds that you should get to know reindeer only with the owner's guidance.6

Feeding needs a little coaching too. Show children how to hold lichen on a flat palm and let the reindeer take it, and to step back when the food is gone. Children who are nervous can feed from beside a parent, or simply watch; nobody needs to force a meeting, and the reindeer will not mind. Older children can be given a job, such as holding the lichen bag or counting the antlered reindeer in the corral, which keeps them calm and busy.

Our family trip to Levi, Finland: four nights in Lapland

Nothing loads until you tap play.

Keeping small children warm

Children chill faster than adults, and a sleigh ride is time spent sitting still. Levi's midwinter is cold: the January thermometer at Kittilä Airport sits between -17 °C and -8.3 °C on average.7 The Lovimainas rides are rescheduled or refunded when it is -30 °C or colder.

Dress children in layers, following Visit Levi's advice: a merino base for children who sweat little, a fleece on top, and a hooded windproof outer layer.89 Add a hat that covers the ears, mittens on a string, a neck tube they can pull up, and boots with room for two pairs of socks.

Check what the visit lends. The snowmobile combo includes an overall, boots and gloves, and on the lakeside farm visit thermal long jackets are part of the package. On a short visit, plan a warm-up straight after the ride: this site's tour ends with hot juice and cookies.

Timing the visit with children

Short is good with young children. This site's tour lasts 1.5 hours, and the Kermikkä ride from Levi Center takes 1 hour in all, including the bus. A half-day wilderness visit of 4 hours or more suits school-age children who enjoy being outdoors.

Think about the light. In midwinter, days are short: the sun does not rise in Levi around mid-December, while mid-February already has 7.8 hours of daylight.7 Blue twilight is typical of the polar night in northern Finland, and that soft blue light suits a slow sleigh ride.10

Be on time. Some operators are strict: Keo Wilderness does not refund or reschedule late arrivals and asks guests to be at the meeting point 10 minutes early. With children, add a buffer for the inevitable lost mitten.

Health, mobility and special needs

Check the not-suitable list before you book. The Keo Wilderness combo excludes people with mobility impairments, heart or kidney problems, high blood pressure, animal allergies or motion sickness, wheelchair users, babies under 1 and people over 95 kg. The Easy Travel safari is not suitable for wheelchair users or pregnant women.

If a family member uses a wheelchair, the Kermikkä ride from Levi Center carries the wheelchair accessible label, as does the Polar Lights Tours husky and reindeer combo. Contact the operator first to ask about the sleigh and the path at the farm.

Allergies deserve a word too. The Rautusjärvi ride with a Sámi herder and the Lovimainas 3-in-1 combo both list animal allergies as a reason not to take part. A child with a reindeer or dog allergy will be happier on a visit where they can watch from a distance.

Making it memorable

Children remember stories as much as rides. Before the trip, tell them that calves are born in May, that female reindeer can have antlers too, and that antlers grow up to 2 cm a day in summer.111213 At the farm they can check which reindeer have antlers and ask the herder why.

A keepsake helps. The snowmobile combo gives each guest a reindeer driving licence to take home. On other visits, a good photo of your child beside a reindeer, taken calmly with the guide's help, is the souvenir that lasts.

Finish with something warm and unhurried. Hot juice by the fire, a cookie and a few more minutes watching the herd are often the part children talk about at dinner. Leave time for it instead of rushing back to the slopes. In summer, Visit Levi notes, reindeer even wander along the roads in Levi Centre, and a family on a summer trip can keep practising the herders' rules on the way home.14
